Bhitarkanika National Park Closed for Annual Crocodile and Bird Census

Kendrapara: Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapara district has been closed to visitors until January 22 to facilitate the annual census of crocodiles and migratory birds, officials announced on Tuesday.

Assistant Conservator of Forests, Manas Das, informed that several teams have been deployed to conduct the headcount in the park’s creeks, rivers, wetlands, and mangrove forests. The temporary closure is aimed at preventing human interference, which could disrupt the process. Restrictions will also help minimize noise pollution during the census activities, he added.

Bhitarkanika National Park is renowned for hosting 70% of India’s estuarine crocodile population. Conservation efforts for these reptiles began in 1975, and the park’s ecosystem has since become a haven for the species.

According to the latest census, the sanctuary is home to 1,811 saltwater crocodiles, a species unique to this region of Odisha. These reptiles are not found in any other river system within the state.

Forest officials attribute the steady rise in crocodile numbers to effective conservation measures implemented by the state forest department. Bhitarkanika’s thriving ecosystem also attracts a large number of migratory birds, making the park a key site for biodiversity in the region.
