BDA Plans Major Redevelopment of Priyadarshini Market Complex at CRPF Square

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has initiated plans to redevelop the Priyadarshini Market Complex at CRPF Square, aiming to transform the ageing commercial centre into a modern marketplace equipped with improved infrastructure and public amenities.

The decision was taken after Housing and Urban Development Minister and BDA Chairman Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra visited the market and held discussions with shop owners and stakeholders regarding the future of the nearly four-decade-old complex.

Ekamra MLA Babu Singh, BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana and senior officials of the authority accompanied the Minister during the site inspection and interaction with traders.

Addressing the stakeholders, Dr. Mahapatra said repeated repair and maintenance works would not be sufficient to address the structural and functional challenges of the existing building. He noted that a comprehensive redevelopment project would provide a long-term solution while meeting the growing commercial requirements of the city.

“The market occupies a prime location in the city and deserves infrastructure that matches present-day needs. The redevelopment project will focus on creating a modern commercial space with better facilities for traders and visitors,” he said.

Built by BDA in 1987, the Priyadarshini Market Complex spreads over 1.44 acres and currently accommodates 152 shops, including 72 units on the ground floor and 80 units on the first floor. The complex also houses 100 vending platforms, two restaurants and five office spaces. The commercial units were originally allotted to traders on a licence and rental basis.

BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana said the redevelopment proposal has been shaped through multiple rounds of consultations with traders and shop allottees. He assured stakeholders that BDA would take necessary measures to minimise inconvenience during the construction phase.

“Suitable arrangements for temporary relocation and compensation, wherever applicable under existing norms, will be made to support traders during the redevelopment process,” Rana said.

According to BDA officials, the proposed project will focus on optimal utilisation of the land while introducing modern facilities such as adequate parking space, enhanced fire safety measures, upgraded infrastructure and improved public conveniences.

The new market complex is also expected to accommodate additional commercial units, creating more business opportunities and strengthening the commercial ecosystem in the area. Officials said the project would contribute to improved urban infrastructure while offering a more organised and convenient shopping environment for citizens.

The redevelopment initiative forms part of BDA’s broader efforts to modernise key urban infrastructure and create sustainable commercial spaces in the capital city. Once completed, the revamped Priyadarshini Market Complex is expected to emerge as a landmark commercial destination in Bhubaneswar.
