BCCI Mandates Player Participation in State Teams to Instil Discipline Ahead of IPL

Mumbai:  In a bid to instil discipline and prioritize domestic cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken decisive action against players idling away their time, waiting for the Indian Premier League (IPL) to commence. The BCCI, in conjunction with national selectors, has issued a directive requiring players not part of the national squad or undergoing rehabilitation to join their respective state teams for the upcoming round of Ranji Trophy matches starting on February 16.

The email communication sent to players on Monday emphasizes the importance of participating in domestic cricket, particularly the Ranji Trophy, to maintain competitive form and readiness for international and IPL competitions. This move is seen as a significant step towards ensuring that players prioritize their commitments to state teams and contribute to the development of Indian cricket at the grassroots level.

The directive impacts players like Ishan Kishan, who, despite training in Baroda for IPL preparations, is mandated to play for his home state Jharkhand against Rajasthan in the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches. The ruling also extends to other players such as Krunal Pandya and Deepak Chahar, who have been inactive in Ranji Trophy matches, and individuals like Shreyas Iyer, who are excluded from the national team due to poor form.

A BCCI official stated, “Players cannot simply prioritize international cricket or the IPL. They must make themselves available for domestic cricket and honour their commitments to their respective state teams.” The decision reflects the BCCI’s commitment to nurturing talent and ensuring that players actively participate in the domestic circuit, contributing to the overall development of Indian cricket.

The directive comes in response to concerns about the prolonged absence of players like Ishan Kishan from competitive cricket, sparking a debate within Indian cricket circles.
