Benoni: In a heart-stopping encounter at Benoni, Australia secured a thrilling one-wicket victory over Pakistan in the semi-final of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup. Following a strategic decision to chase, Australia’s bowlers, led by Tom Straker’s exceptional 6/24, bundled out Pakistan for 179. Straker’s performance marked the best figures by a bowler in an U19 World Cup semi-final or final.
Pakistan’s Ali Raza (4/34) and Arafat Minhas (2/20) fought valiantly, keeping their team in contention until the final moments. However, Australia, anchored by Harry Dixon and Oliver Peake, managed to edge past Pakistan in a nail-biting contest.
Australia’s pursuit of 180 started steadily with contributions from Harry Dixon and Sam Konstas. Despite Ali Raza breaking the partnership, Dixon and Peake guided Australia back on track. However, Minhas posed a constant threat, dismissing Dixon just when Australia seemed in control.
Tom Campbell and Ollie Peake then steadied the ship, building a crucial partnership. Yet, Minhas struck again, removing Campbell, and Raza dismissed Peake to set the stage for a thrilling finish. In the final over, Callum Vidler and Raf MacMillan held their nerve, securing Australia’s place in the final.
Earlier, Shahzaib Khan and Shamyl Hussain provided a solid start for Pakistan, but Tom Straker’s brilliance with the ball turned the tide. Straker’s 6/24 dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup, leaving Australia with a manageable target.
Despite Azan Awais and Arafat Minhas attempting to revive Pakistan’s innings, Straker’s persistent efforts eventually cleaned up the tail. Australia’s Mahli Beardman and Raf MacMillan also contributed crucial breakthroughs, sealing the fate of the match in Australia’s favor.
Australia’s breathtaking one-wicket victory sets the stage for an electrifying final in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup against India. Cricket fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating the climax of this highly competitive tournament.
