Australia Clinches Victory Against Sri Lanka in U19 World Cup Encounter

Kimberley: In a thrilling encounter at the Kimberley Oval, Australia secured a comprehensive victory against Sri Lanka in the ongoing U19 World Cup. Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka faced early setbacks, but Dinura Kalupahana’s resilient half-century guided them to a competitive total of 208. However, Australia’s disciplined bowling, led by Callum Vidler’s 3/28, restricted Sri Lanka in the latter part of their innings.

Sri Lanka’s innings witnessed partnerships and setbacks, with Sineth Jayawardena, Supun Waduge, and Ravishan Nethsara contributing to the total. Kalupahana’s valiant effort of 64 provided stability, but wickets tumbled in the final overs as Sri Lanka managed to post 208 on the board.

Australia commenced their chase aggressively, with openers Harry Dixon and Sam Konstas setting the tone. Dixon’s quick 49-ball 49 laid a strong foundation. Although Sri Lanka managed to pick up crucial wickets, Ryan Hicks’ unbeaten 77 and Tom Campbell’s support ensured Australia’s victory with ten balls to spare.

Player of the Match, Ryan Hicks, shared insights into their strategy during the challenging phase of losing three quick wickets. “The plan was to take control of the game, look to bat positively because once you let consecutive dots build, it’s hard to come out of that hole. Campbell and I decided to keep the runs ticking against the spinners and then help ourselves against the pacers.”

With this victory, Australia remains undefeated in the tournament with three wins out of three. They are set to face England and West Indies at the Kimberley Oval on January 31 and February 2, respectively, in the Super Six stage. The win adds to Australia’s confidence as they progress further in the U19 World Cup.
