Australia Clinches ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 with Dominant Display

Benoni:  Australia emerged as the undisputed champions of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024, showcasing an exceptional all-around performance to defeat India by 79 runs in a thrilling final held at Benoni.

Opting to bat first, Australian captain Hugh Weibgen’s decision proved fruitful as his team posted a formidable total of 253/7 at the end of their innings. This set the record for the highest-ever total in an U19 World Cup final. Harjas Singh played a crucial role, top-scoring with 55, while Weibgen, Harry Dixon, and Ollie Peak contributed with valuable 40s. Raj Limbani was the standout bowler for India, finishing with figures of 3/38.

India’s pursuit of the challenging target suffered a shambolic start, losing four crucial wickets within the first 20 overs, including their top run-getters Musheer Khan, Uday Saharan, and Sachin Dhas. Despite a late charge from Abhishek Murugan (42), the relentless bowling attack from Australia made the victory a mere formality, securing the win in the 44th over.

Australia’s innings had its own share of highlights, with Harry Dixon providing a belligerent start and accumulating 15 runs off Naman Tiwari’s first over. However, Tiwari struck back, dismissing both Weibgen (48) and Dixon in quick succession. A patient stand by Harjas Singh (50) and Ryan Hicks ensured a healthy run rate, and Ollie Peake’s positive intent helped Australia reach a commanding total of 253, adding 66 runs in the last 10 overs.

The Australian bowlers, led by Mahli Beardman, demonstrated discipline and control throughout India’s innings, consistently picking up wickets and stifling the run flow. Despite Abhishek Murugan’s spirited effort, the target proved insurmountable for India, ultimately falling short by 79 runs.

The U19 World Cup final witnessed exceptional performances on both sides, with Australia’s dominance in batting, bowling, and fielding securing their triumph. The victory marked a crowning achievement for the young Australian squad, and their impressive display bodes well for the future of Australian cricket.
