APEDA’s Initiatives Propel Uttar Pradesh as a Leading Agri-Exporter: FPOs Explore UAE Markets

Varanasi:   Bolstering the contribution of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in the agricultural and processed food product exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) organized a successful exposure visit for FPOs to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The visit, which included 47 members representing FPOs from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand, aimed to unlock export opportunities and strengthen the role of FPOs in the agri and processed food sector.

During the visit, FPO representatives explored the Al-Aweer fruit and vegetable market and engaged with potential buyers at LuLu Hypermarket in Dubai. The immediate outcome of the visit was the finalization of an order for fresh turmeric, marking a promising start for the participating FPOs. Other FPOs are currently in negotiations with buyers, with more orders expected in the near future.

To share the experiences and benefits of the UAE visit, APEDA conducted a capacity-building and experience-sharing program in Varanasi on March 5, 2024. FPO representatives shared insights on export regulations, market requirements, and potential products with their fellow farmers. They emphasized the significance of implementing good agricultural practices (GAP) to meet regulatory standards in importing countries.

The event also witnessed the flag-off of a consignment of fresh turmeric to Sharjah, UAE, showcasing the export potential of the region. Fresh fruits were simultaneously exported from Varanasi’s LBSI Airport, highlighting the growing capabilities of the region in international markets.

APEDA, operating through its regional wing in Varanasi, has identified the Purvanchal region as a model Agri Export Hub. Over 120 FPOs from the region have been enrolled as APEDA members, with a special focus on those dealing in One District One Product (ODOP)/Geographical Indication (GI) products, women & SC/ST-led FPOs, and those from the Northeastern/Himalayan states and landlocked areas.

Shri Kaushal Raj Sharma, Divisional Commissioner, Varanasi Division, Government of Uttar Pradesh, commended APEDA’s efforts in the Purvanchal region. He praised the exposure visit for FPOs, citing it as a valuable opportunity facilitated by APEDA to enhance agricultural exports.

Chairman APEDA, Shri Abhishek Dev, highlighted the significance of exposure visits in exploring agricultural export opportunities. He acknowledged the keen interest shown by FPOs, underscoring it as a positive indicator of the region’s capacity to meet international market demands. Uttar Pradesh’s rise as the third-largest agricultural exporting state in India was attributed to the deep potential of the region and APEDA’s sustained efforts.

APEDA’s interventions have positively transformed the agri-export landscape in the Purvanchal region, resulting in growth in agri-exports. The region’s success stories in exporting fresh fruits, vegetables, and rice showcase its ability to meet global demand, positioning it as a key player in the agricultural export market. Through targeted programs and international engagements, APEDA continues to empower FPOs and exporters, contributing to the region’s status as a significant agri-exporter.
