Three-time national award winning veteran actor Surekha Sikri passed away after a cardiac arrest at the age of 75.
She had a brain stroke in 2020 and has been unwell for quite some time.
A prominent actor, she has been associated with theatre, film and television for decades. She made her debut in films in 1978, with the film Kissa Kursi Ka. Since then she has acted in many good films and television serials with powerful roles.
She has won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress thrice, for Tamas in 1988, Mammo in 1995 and Badhaai Ho in 2018.
She became a household name with her portrayal of a cunning grandmother in a popular television serial Balika Vadhu which ran for eight years. She was associated with the serial from the beginning till the end. In serial Godan based on Munshi Premchand’s novel aired in Doordarshan, she portrayed the character of Dhania wife of the main protagonist Hori.
She was last seen in director Zoya Akhtar’s short film in the Netflix anthology Ghost Stories.
