AIIMS Bhubaneswar Performs Odisha’s First Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery

Bhubaneswar: In a landmark achievement for the state’s healthcare sector, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has successfully conducted Odisha’s first-ever robotic knee replacement surgery, ushering in a new era of precision-based orthopaedic care.

The breakthrough procedure was carried out by the Department of Orthopaedics on a 66-year-old female patient using cutting-edge robotic technology. According to AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, the surgery was completed without complications, and the patient is currently in stable condition.

Dr. Biswas lauded the surgical team for their accomplishment, noting that the introduction of robotic services marks a transformative step in expanding access to advanced surgical care. “With the introduction of robotic services, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has made robot-assisted surgeries accessible to patients across all social strata,” he stated.

Highlighting the advantages of robotic assistance, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, Dr. Bishnu Prasad Patro, said the technology significantly reduces the risks associated with traditional surgery by improving precision and control during the operation. “Robotic knee replacement surgery offers minimized risks of human error and improved surgical outcomes,” he noted.

Unlike conventional methods that rely on jigs and cutting blocks—especially challenging in cases with severe deformities, prior surgeries, or advanced arthritis—the robotic system provides real-time feedback and fine-tunes surgical steps. Some components of the operation are even performed autonomously by the robot, guided by navigation and artificial intelligence, ensuring greater accuracy and consistency throughout the procedure.
