Adani Green Energy Explores Pumped Storage Power Project in Odisha’s Nayagarh

Bhubaneswar: Adani Green Energy Group has shown keen interest in setting up a Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Birigarh, Nayagarh, Odisha, to boost the state’s renewable energy production. The proposal was brought up during a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singhdeo at Lok Seba Bhavan on Monday, where Adani’s senior official Subrat Tripathy and other representatives discussed the project’s potential.

The PSP would involve pumping water into elevated areas for storage, which would later be used to generate electricity. Birigarh, identified as a prime location for renewable energy projects, could serve as a key site for this initiative. The company is also exploring additional locations, such as Bargarh and Bolangir, to expand the project’s scope.

Odisha, with its rich renewable energy reserves, is well-positioned to harness these resources, and Adani Green Energy aims to tap into this potential to meet the growing demand for electricity. In line with the state government’s 2022 renewable energy policy, the project would help fulfill the state’s goals of promoting green energy, especially in critical sectors like aluminum production.

Singhdeo emphasized the project’s alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of achieving 50% renewable energy by 2030. He noted that this initiative could not only enhance renewable energy capacity but also support environmental conservation, promote regional development, and create jobs in the surrounding areas.

The meeting covered various aspects of the project, including cost assessments, technological requirements, and site selection. Senior officials, including Additional Chief Secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Deo Ranjan Singh, were present along with representatives from Adani Green Energy to discuss the next steps for this ambitious venture.
