A Student in Manipur Converts Vintage Bajaj-150 Scooter into EV

Imphal: Albert Sarangthem, a fifth-semester computer engineering student at Manipur Institute of Technology, has garnered acclaim for his inventive prowess by transforming a vintage Bajaj-150 scooter into an eco-friendly electric vehicle (EV) named ‘Samadon EV II.’ This remarkable achievement follows his earlier success in converting a bike into an electric vehicle, known as ‘Samadon EV I,’ inspired by Meitie mythology’s divine flying horse.

The eye-catching red Samadon EV II, now capable of covering up to 50 km on a single electric charge, breathes new life into a relic that had been abandoned and rusted for decades at Albert’s relative’s house. Overcoming challenges such as the scarcity of essential components in the local market, a lack of mechanical tools, and delays attributed to ongoing ethnic conflicts, Albert meticulously replaced traditional components like the engine and carburetor with a motor, speed controller, battery, and other necessary elements. The entire process took eight months, showcasing his dedication and skills.

Albert’s mechanical ingenuity has earned recognition from Transport Minister Khashim Vashum, who rewarded him monetarily. Additionally, his engineering institute presented him with a certificate of appreciation in 2022 for his outstanding achievement.

However, it’s important to note that authorities in the Manipur transport department clarified that such vehicle transformations require ‘Type approval’ from the government.
