Bhubaneswar: The city of Bhubaneswar bid a sorrowful farewell to veteran Ollywood actor Uttam Mohanty, who passed away last night after a prolonged illness. The actor was cremated today with full state honours at the Satya Nagar cremation ground. His son, actor Babushan, lit the funeral pyre amidst a large gathering of fans, political figures, well-wishers, and members of the film fraternity, marking the final journey of the beloved star.
Uttam Mohanty, aged 66, had been battling a liver ailment and was receiving treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram since February 8. His mortal remains were brought from his residence in Jagannath Vihar to the Satya Nagar crematorium, where the State police presented a ceremonial guard of honour before the cremation.
A Glorious Journey in Cinema
The actor, who graced the screens for decades, was a cornerstone of Odia cinema. With over 135 films to his name, including significant roles in Bengali and Hindi films, Mohanty’s performances were known for their depth and versatility. He captivated audiences in iconic films such as Astaraga (1982), Palatak (1985), Ja Devi Sarbavutesu (1988), Jashoda, Subhadra, and Kalamanika.

Leaders from various sectors paid their respects to Mohanty’s memory. President Droupadi Murmu expressed her sorrow through a tweet, saying, “I’m deeply saddened to hear about the demise of eminent film actor Shri Uttam Mohanty. His contribution to Odia cinema will always be remembered.”
Other notable figures, including Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and Deputy Chief Ministers S. K. V. Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, also offered their heartfelt condolences to the actor’s family during this difficult time.
