National Institute of Siddha Sets Guinness World Record with Mass Varmam Therapy Event

Chennai: The National Institute of Siddha (NIS) has achieved a historic milestone by setting a Guinness World Record for providing Varmam therapy to 567 individuals simultaneously. The event, held today at the NIS campus in Tambaram, Chennai, underscores the growing recognition of Siddha medicine and its non-invasive, drug-free therapeutic methods.

Union State Minister of Ayush (Independent Charge) Shri Prataprao Jadhav, in a written message, commended the institute’s efforts, highlighting the significance of traditional healing systems like Siddha in modern healthcare.

The record-breaking event involved 567 trained Varmanis (Varmam healers) delivering therapy to an equal number of participants, showcasing the therapeutic potential of this ancient practice. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, lauded the achievement, stating, “This is more than just an award; it’s a moment to raise awareness among the younger generation about the science and value of such traditional practices.”

Prof. Dr. R. Meenakumari, Director of NIS, emphasized the uniqueness of Varmam therapy. “It is a cost-effective, non-invasive, and non-pharmacological treatment beneficial for various conditions such as neurological diseases, musculoskeletal issues, autism spectrum disorders, and cerebral palsy in children. This record will bring much-needed global attention to the Siddha system of medicine,” she said.

The event is part of NIS’s ongoing mission to promote Siddha medicine and Varmam therapy on a global scale. Varmam therapy, rooted in the Siddha medical tradition, has long been revered for its effectiveness in treating musculoskeletal pain, injuries, and neurological disorders. Unlike its martial art counterpart, Varmakalai, Varmam therapy is a scientifically-backed healing practice addressing conditions such as stroke, arthritis, and trauma-related injuries.

The achievement serves as a testament to Siddha medicine’s growing global recognition and its potential to contribute to holistic healthcare solutions. Through such initiatives, the National Institute of Siddha continues to champion traditional healing practices and ensure their accessibility both within India and internationally.
