Gurugram: The CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (NIScPR) and Gurugram University jointly inaugurated the International Conference on Communication and Dissemination of Traditional Knowledge (CDTK-2024) today at the Gurugram University auditorium. This landmark event aims to explore and integrate Indian traditional knowledge within a scientific framework for global audiences.
The conference began with a welcome address by Prof. Dinesh Kumar, Vice Chancellor of Gurugram University, who expressed excitement about the discussions on India’s cultural legacies and their adaptation for modern-day needs. He welcomed dignitaries, scholars, and participants to the international event, setting a collaborative tone for the sessions ahead.
Prof. Ranjana Aggarwal, Director of CSIR-NIScPR, highlighted the national initiative SVASTIK (Scientifically Validated Traditional Knowledge), coordinated by CSIR-NIScPR. Prof. Aggarwal shared that SVASTIK has published scientifically validated stories on India’s traditional knowledge in 17 Indian languages and released two SVASTIK publications, engaging students and society in exploring science through India’s cultural wisdom.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Shekhar C. Mande, Distinguished Professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University and former Director General of CSIR. Dr. Mande emphasized the importance of merging traditional knowledge with modern science, celebrating India’s achievements in metallurgy, mathematics, and medicine. He praised SVASTIK’s work in promoting awareness of India’s scientific traditions and referenced William Dalrymple’s recent book, The Golden Road, which highlights India’s scientific heritage.
As Chief Guest, Prof. K.K. Aggarwal, President of South Asian University, New Delhi, stressed the importance of interdisciplinary research. He advocated for sharing traditional Indian knowledge globally rather than sidelining it, and commended SVASTIK’s role in facilitating this exchange.
The inaugural session also featured the release of the conference Souvenir & Abstract book and two digital flipbooks titled Treasure of Indian Traditions: A Journey through Scientifically Validated Indian Traditional Knowledge in Hindi and Punjabi. Dr. Charu Lata, Principal Scientist at CSIR-NIScPR and Coordinator of CDTK-2024, delivered a vote of thanks, recognizing the collaborative efforts behind the event.
The two-day conference will include expert-led sessions and collaborative discussions, reinforcing India’s commitment to sharing its scientifically validated traditional knowledge with the world.
