PM Lays Foundation for Development Projects Worth ₹7,600 Crore, Inaugurates Indian Institute of Skills in Mumbai

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a series of development projects worth over ₹7,600 crore in Maharashtra via video conference today, marking a significant milestone in enhancing India’s infrastructure and youth employability. A key highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai, a cutting-edge institution designed to prepare an industry-ready workforce for Industry 4.0.

The IIS aims to equip youth with the skills needed for emerging sectors such as factory automation, digital manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, ensuring that India’s workforce is well-prepared for national and global opportunities. The institute, developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Tata IIS (under Tata Trusts), will offer advanced hands-on training across various trades, catering to both the services and manufacturing sectors.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of a confident and skilled youth for the nation’s future. “The world only trusts a country when its youth is filled with confidence,” he remarked. “Today’s young India is writing a new future for our nation, and the global community sees India as a significant hub for human resources, especially in education, healthcare, and software development.”

The Prime Minister underscored the government’s commitment to aligning the skills of Indian youth with global standards, highlighting the vital role of initiatives like the IIS in fulfilling this vision.

Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, expressed his enthusiasm for the inauguration, noting, “Institutions like IIS are pivotal in translating the Prime Minister’s vision of India as the ‘Skill Capital of the World’ into reality. By providing cutting-edge expertise, this institute not only opens doors to opportunities within India but also positions our youth to compete globally.”

The Indian Institute of Skills is built on a 4-acre campus within the National Skill Training Institute in Chunabhatti, Mumbai. It will initially offer six specialized courses, including Advanced Industrial Automation & Robotics, Electric Vehicle Battery Specialist, and Additive Manufacturing. Future plans include the addition of hostel facilities to enhance the learning experience.

Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Maharashtra’s Minister for Skills, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, highlighted the importance of the IIS as a state-of-the-art facility that will attract talent globally. “The Tata Group is synonymous with trust and growth, and this institute provides an excellent opportunity for every candidate to learn and excel,” he said.

The institute has established partnerships with over 15 global and Indian Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to ensure students receive practical, hands-on experience. Once trained, graduates will be prepared to enter emerging industries, such as electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, and robotics.

Additionally, the IIS will offer short-term courses in collaboration with industry partners, further expanding the opportunities for skill development in India.

Venu Srinivasan, Chairman of Tata IIS, also praised the institute, stating, “India’s growing economy demands a skilled, resilient workforce. The IIS, Mumbai, with its world-class facilities, embodies the Tata Group’s vision of addressing national challenges and empowering the youth to transition into employment and enterprise.”
