New Delhi: President of India, Droupadi Murmu, graced the 10th convocation of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi today, delivering a powerful message on the importance of compassion and sensitivity in the medical profession.
In her address to the graduating doctors, President Murmu emphasized the need for a “healing touch” in their approach to patient care. “Along with the medicine and advice you give, there must also be a reassuring presence,” she said, urging doctors to remain empathetic, especially in difficult situations where patients and their families may be in a state of shock. She noted that values such as sensitivity and compassion not only enhance the quality of care but also improve a doctor’s working style.
The President acknowledged the challenges faced by healthcare professionals, particularly when families react emotionally in moments of crisis. She strongly condemned any misbehavior or aggression directed toward doctors and hospital staff, stating, “No doctor ever wishes harm on a patient, but medical science, despite its advancements, still has limitations.” She emphasized that healthcare professionals often work under high stress, making difficult decisions under immense pressure, which may sometimes make them appear impatient. However, she reminded the public that this does not reflect a lack of care or seriousness.
Touching upon the broader theme of women’s empowerment, President Murmu raised concerns about the underrepresentation of women’s health issues in medical research. She called on the medical fraternity, especially researchers, to prioritize women’s health in their studies. “This will not only increase our understanding of diseases but will also contribute to improving public health outcomes,” she said.
The President also spoke about the rapid advancements in science and technology, highlighting how telemedicine is expanding access to quality healthcare in remote areas. She praised the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to revolutionize diagnostics and treatment. Encouraging the young graduates to maintain a zeal for lifelong learning, she urged them to stay updated on the latest research and technological innovations, ensuring better care for their patients.
