National Workshop in Ranchi Focuses on Empowering Women in Urban Livelihoods
Ranchi: A two-day national workshop under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), concluded in Ranchi, Jharkhand, on February 16, 2024. The workshop aimed at fostering resilience and empowerment for women in urban areas across India.
The event brought together approximately 150 delegates from various parts of the country, including State Mission Directors of the State Urban Livelihoods Mission, senior officials from MoHUA and the Jharkhand state government, UNDP India representatives, sector experts, and stakeholders from research institutions, start-ups, philanthropies, and donor organizations.
Several panel discussions during the workshop focused on strategies to enable women-led urban livelihoods, exploring emerging sectors and types of enterprises in climate, services, retail, and manufacturing. The discussions also delved into topics such as the Multidimensional Poverty Index (NMPI) and the role of philanthropies in addressing urban poverty through innovative financial investments and identifying priority areas.
The workshop served as a platform for states to share best practices related to women-led urban livelihoods and economic enhancement. This facilitated peer learning and the replication of successful models by other states.
Shri Rahul Kapoor, Joint Secretary, MoHUA, introduced the concept of urban care models during the event. These models provide care infrastructure and services for the urban poor, enhancing their access to livelihood opportunities and fostering environments conducive to the well-being of young children and caregivers. Mr. Kapoor emphasized the need for a holistic approach to tackling urban poverty, integrating care philosophy into city design and creating an environment that supports women, children, and the elderly.
Ms. Isabelle Tschan, Resident Representative of UNDP India, highlighted the importance of initiatives like DAY-NULM in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. She underscored the critical role of Urban Livelihood Missions at the national and state levels in ensuring access to basic services, affordable housing, and improved living conditions, particularly for marginalized communities and women. Ms. Tschan expressed UNDP’s commitment to collaborating with DAY-NULM to address urban poverty through livelihood promotion strategies and tailored solutions for communities.
