Paris: In a thrilling upset at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat made her third Olympic appearance one to remember by defeating the defending champion, Yui Susaki of Japan, in the women’s 50kg freestyle round of 16 wrestling match.
Susaki, a formidable opponent and the Tokyo 2020 gold medalist, took the early lead, finishing the first period ahead 1-0. However, Phogat displayed remarkable resilience and skill in the second period, outscoring Susaki 3-2 to secure her place in the quarter-finals.
Yui Susaki’s defeat is particularly notable given her impressive credentials. She is not only the reigning Olympic champion but also a three-time world champion and the current Asian champion in the 50kg category.
