Women Lead Odisha’s Public Transport Shift: 57% of Odisha Yatri Users Are Female

Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable sign of growing confidence in Odisha’s public transport ecosystem, recent data has revealed that women account for 57.44% of total users on the Odisha Yatri platform between October 2024 and July 2025. Of the 2.57 lakh passengers who used the app-based service, more than 1.48 lakh were women—underscoring enhanced accessibility, safety, and gender inclusion in the state’s mobility landscape.

Launched in January 2025 by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the Odisha Yatri app had begun pilot operations in October 2024. Usage patterns show a consistent female preference, peaking at 61.63% in January 2025. Even in July 2025, women riders made up 55.38% of the total users, significantly surpassing male ridership.

Officials attribute this trend to verified drivers, real-time trip tracking, improved last-mile connectivity, and a responsive grievance redressal system. The integration of the app with enforcement and transport authorities has created a safe and accountable commuting experience, particularly benefiting women and vulnerable groups.

“The data speaks for itself — women are not just participating; they are leading the adoption of Odisha Yatri. This reflects the government’s strong commitment to gender-responsive, inclusive transport,” said Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department.

Adding to its community impact, Odisha Yatri partnered with the State Transport Authority this year to provide free auto rides to over 30,000 pilgrims during the Puri Ratha Yatra.

Looking forward, the state plans to expand Odisha Yatri to more cities and introduce new services such as ambulance and boating facilities under the platform, widening its reach and social impact.

As Odisha advances toward a safer, smarter, and more inclusive transport system, the surge in female ridership stands as a powerful testament to the trust women place in services designed with their dignity, safety, and convenience at the forefront.
