Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar Advocates for CAA and Independent Media at NDTV India of the Year Awards

New Delhi:  Addressing at the ‘NDTV India of the Year Awards 2023-2024’, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar reiterated the inclusive nature of India’s democracy and emphasized that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) does not strip any Indian citizen of their citizenship rights. He emphasized that the CAA aims to provide relief to persecuted religious minorities in neighboring countries without infringing upon the rights of existing citizens.

Dhankhar expressed his dismay over the failure of certain sections to acknowledge the positive impact of measures like the CAA, which are guided by the constitutional values of secularism, equality, and justice. He stressed the historical context and the humanitarian aspect of providing succor to persecuted minorities in the region.

Recognizing the pivotal role of media as the fourth pillar of democracy, the Vice-President emphasized the importance of an independent and objective media. He urged media outlets to convey accurate perspectives to foster a better understanding of India, cautioning against becoming pawns in orchestrated narratives aimed at tarnishing the nation’s image.

Addressing concerns about media credibility and self-regulation, Dhankhar emphasized that media credibility rests on its objectivity and avoidance of political entanglements. He warned against the politicization of media and stressed the need for responsible journalism to counter misinformation and fake news, which he described as threats to democracy.

The Vice-President also called for economic nationalism and praised the contributions of young journalists in smaller cities, urging support for their endeavors. Reflecting on India’s economic trajectory, Dhankhar highlighted the nation’s transformation from being part of the ‘fragile five’ to emerging as a major economic force globally. He emphasized the country’s infrastructural growth and technological advancements as indicators of its progress.

Acknowledging India’s vibrant democracy and robust justice system, Dhankhar emphasized the importance of equality before the law and transparent governance for the optimal functioning of democratic values.

The event was attended by notable figures including Sanjay Pugalia, Editor-in-Chief of NDTV, Amitabh Kant, and Amjad Ali Khan, among others.
