Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty Assumes Command as Commandant, Indian Naval Academy

New Delhi: Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty assumed the prestigious position of Commandant at the Indian Naval Academy on January 15, 2024. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1989, Vice Admiral McCarty brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role.

A distinguished graduate of Defence Service Staff College, Wellington (2005), and National Defence College, New Delhi (2017), Vice Admiral McCarty is a specialist in ‘Gunnery and Missiles.’ His illustrious career includes serving as part of the commissioning crew of INS Delhi and holding specialist roles on the frontline Guided Missile Destroyer.

Throughout his career, Vice Admiral McCarty has commanded various vessels, showcasing his leadership skills. Notable among his commands are the Anti-Submarine Patrol Vessel INS Ajay, Guided Missile Corvette INS Khanjar, and Guided Missile Frigate INS Shivalik. His service record includes significant roles such as Executive officer of a Seaward Defence Patrol Vessel, Guided Missile Vessel, and Landing Platform Dock INS Jalashwa.

In staff assignments, Vice Admiral McCarty served as the Training Commander at the Naval Academy and held the position of Command Plans Officer at the Headquarters Eastern Naval Command. His international experience includes being the Directing Staff at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Sri Lanka, and India’s Defence Adviser to the Republic of Singapore, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of the Philippines.

Elevated to the Flag Rank on February 10, 2020, Vice Admiral McCarty served as the Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Staff Requirements) at the Naval Headquarters. In this role, he was responsible for Capability Development and formulating the Combat Policy of the Indian Navy. Before assuming the charge of Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, he served as the Flag Officer Commanding the Western Fleet from November 15, 2022, to November 9, 2023.
