Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla Assumes Charge as Chief of Personnel of Indian Navy

New Delhi: Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, AVSM, NM, took over as the Chief of Personnel (COP) of the Indian Navy, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious naval career. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1989, Vice Admiral Bhalla brings with him a wealth of experience spanning over 35 years, encompassing diverse roles and responsibilities both at sea and onshore.

Throughout his distinguished career, Vice Admiral Bhalla has held a myriad of specialist, staff, and operational appointments, demonstrating exceptional leadership and acumen. Notable among his sea postings are commands of frontline warships including INS Nishank, INS Taragiri, and INS Beas, where he showcased exemplary command capabilities. His tenure as Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF) was marked by significant milestones, including serving as the Officer in Tactical Command for the prestigious President’s Fleet Review (PFR – 22) and the Sea Phase of the multinational exercise MILAN – 22.

Onshore, Vice Admiral Bhalla has held key staff appointments at Naval Headquarters, including Assistant Chief of Personnel (Human Resource Development). He also contributed significantly to officer training at the Naval Academy and represented the Indian Navy in diplomatic assignments overseas. Prior to assuming his current role, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, overseeing critical operations such as Op Sankalp and events like the Navy Day Op Demo 2023 at Sindhudurg.

An alumnus of prestigious institutions such as the Royal College of Defence Studies, London; Naval War College; and Defence Services Staff College, Vice Admiral Bhalla has displayed a penchant for academic excellence. His educational credentials include an M.Phil in Defence & Strategic Studies, Masters in International Security and Strategic Studies from King’s College, London, M.Sc in Defence & Strategic Studies from Madras University, and M.Sc in Telecom from CUSAT.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla’s exceptional service to the nation has been duly recognized with prestigious honors such as the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the Nao Sena Medal, and commendations by the Chief of the Naval Staff and the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief. As he assumes the pivotal role of Chief of Personnel, Vice Admiral Bhalla’s leadership and vision are expected to further strengthen the Indian Navy’s capabilities and readiness in the years ahead.
