Usman Khawaja Clinches ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year Honors

Dubai:  Australia’s resurgence in Test cricket has found a charismatic leader in opener Usman Khawaja, who has been named the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2023. Khawaja’s stellar performances played a pivotal role in Australia claiming their maiden ICC World Test Championship title.

The left-handed opener showcased his mettle early in the year, notching a career-best 195* against South Africa, setting the tone for a remarkable 2023. In the challenging away series against India, Khawaja emerged as the top run-scorer, accumulating 333 runs in four matches, featuring a century and two fifties.

Despite facing rare failures in the World Test Championship Final, Khawaja bounced back with resilience during the Ashes series against England. His exceptional form continued as he finished as the highest run-getter yet again, amassing 496 runs. In the series, he played a pivotal role in Australia’s memorable victory, particularly during a challenging first innings where he stitched crucial partnerships with Travis Head, Cameron Green, and Alex Carey en route to his century.

In the decisive second innings against England, Khawaja once again exhibited grit and determination with his 65 off 197 balls. Although his departure left Australia at 209/7, his contributions, coupled with Pat Cummins’ heroics, led to a historic Ashes victory. For his outstanding performances in the series, Khawaja rightfully earned the Player of the Match accolade.

Throughout the year, Khawaja’s stellar performances, including two significant tons against South Africa and India, underscored his resilience and importance in the Australian Test side. His ability to stand tall in crucial moments and contribute significantly with the bat makes him a deserving recipient of the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award for 2023.
