Global cricket fans have reason to celebrate as the International Cricket Council (ICC) announces Olympic legend Usain Bolt as an ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in the West Indies and USA from June 1-29, 2024.
Bolt’s appointment as ambassador for the T20 World Cup underscores the monumental anticipation surrounding the tournament, set to captivate audiences and inspire a new generation of cricket enthusiasts worldwide. With his unparalleled athletic achievements and global appeal, Bolt embodies the spirit of excellence and inclusivity that defines the T20 World Cup.
Renowned for his historic ‘Triple-Triple’ at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Bolt’s journey to sporting immortality began with his unprecedented dominance at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where he shattered world records in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay. His unmatched prowess on the track, marked by lightning-fast times of 9.58 secs, 19.19 secs, and 36.84 secs in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay, respectively, cemented his status as a global icon.
In his role as ambassador, Bolt will play a pivotal role in promoting the T20 World Cup, commencing with a cameo appearance in the event’s official anthem music video alongside acclaimed artists Sean Paul and Kes. The eight-time Olympic Gold Medallist will grace T20 World Cup matches in the West Indies and engage fans in the USA through interactive events, bolstering cricket’s presence in the world’s largest sports market.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the appointment, Bolt shared, “I am thrilled to be an ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Cricket holds a special place in my heart, and I am excited to witness the exhilarating matches in the West Indies and contribute to cricket’s global growth. Bringing cricket to the US market is a significant milestone, paving the way for the sport’s inclusion in the LA Olympics in 2028.”
Geoff Allardice, CEO of the ICC, lauded Bolt’s appointment, stating, “Usain Bolt is a global icon, and we are delighted to have him on board as an Ambassador for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. His unparalleled achievements and infectious energy will resonate with fans, adding a new dimension to the tournament. With Bolt’s involvement, the T20 World Cup promises to be an unforgettable spectacle.”
