Union Minister Virendra Kumar Leads Nationwide ‘Mass Pledge’ Against Drug Abuse Under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan

New Delhi: In a powerful demonstration of commitment to a drug-free India, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar, today led the nation in a ‘Mass Pledge’ against drug abuse under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA). The event, held at Modern School, Barakhamba Road in New Delhi, saw the participation of around 2,700 students and teachers. The ceremony was also graced by the Ministers of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Ramdas Athawale, and Shri B.L. Verma, who joined via video conference.

The event marked a significant moment in India’s fight against substance abuse, with over 1 crore people across the country taking the pledge and participating in various programs. Stakeholders from schools, colleges, universities, and state and district administrations joined virtually from 10,000 locations, making it a truly national movement.

The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, launched in 2020, has been at the forefront of efforts to combat substance abuse in India, particularly focusing on higher educational institutions and youth. As the nation approaches its 78th Independence Day, the NMBA enters its fifth year, reflecting on the progress made and the challenges ahead.

In his address, Dr. Virendra Kumar reminded the audience of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s call for a drug-free India on August 15, 2020. Responding to this call, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment initially identified 272 districts most affected by drug abuse. As of August 2023, the campaign has expanded to include all districts across India.

The Minister highlighted the extensive reach of NMBA, noting that over 11.26 crore people, including more than 3.55 crore youth and 2.35 crore women, have been sensitized about substance abuse. He also emphasized the critical role of educational institutions, with over 3.40 lakh participating in spreading the campaign’s message.

Dr. Virendra Kumar stressed the importance of a collective societal effort to combat the drug menace, calling on everyone to participate in this crucial social cause. He urged students, as the future of the nation, to lead the charge against drug use, be vigilant, and spread awareness within their communities.

Minister of State Shri Ramdas Athawale praised the government’s mission-mode approach to tackling drug abuse and highlighted the achievements of NMBA in reducing drug demand. He commended the students for their involvement in the initiative, recognizing their role in shaping a drug-free future for India.

Secretary (DoSJE), Shri Amit Yadav, in his keynote address, underlined the economic and social impact of substance abuse on the nation. He reiterated the importance of collective efforts in eradicating this menace and achieving a drug-free India.
