Union Minister Giriraj Singh Outlines Ambitious Growth Plans for Textile Industry, Targets US$350 Billion by 2030

New Delhi: Union Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh, announced today that India’s textile industry is poised to grow to US$350 billion by 2030, creating crores of jobs and further establishing India as a global leader in textiles. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the Minister highlighted the achievements of the Ministry in the first 100 days, which lay the foundation for this ambitious growth trajectory.

Singh emphasized the importance of expanding all aspects of the textile value chain to meet the set targets by 2030. “The textiles sector is a crucial driver of employment and economic growth,” he said, noting that over 1 crore people are already employed in the silk cultivation sector alone. The Minister set a long-term production target of 50,000 metric tonnes, with a focus on expanding the Eri Sericulture Promotional Project, which was initially launched in Gujarat, across the country, benefitting castor farmers.

Key to this expansion is the PM MITRA (Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel) Park initiative, which is expected to attract Rs. 70,000 crore in investment and create 21 lakh jobs. The Minister also underscored the significance of Bharat Tex, a platform aimed at attracting foreign investment and advancing India’s 4S goals – style, scale, skill, and sustainability – within the textile sector.

Singh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on design as a critical element of the textile industry. He highlighted the role of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the indigenous trend forecasting initiative VisioNxt, which aims to cater to the fashion aspirations of Indian consumers.

The Minister also identified significant growth potential for technical textiles, which are used across multiple sectors. He set an export target of US$10 billion for technical textiles by 2030.

Additionally, Singh pointed to the government’s ongoing support for the handloom and handicraft sectors, which currently engage around 1 crore artisans. Various initiatives are underway to boost these sectors, ensuring their contribution to India’s cultural and economic growth.

The press conference was attended by Minister of State Shri Pabitra Margherita, Textiles Secretary Ms. Rachna Shah, and other senior officials of the Ministry. They reiterated the Government’s commitment to strengthening all segments of the textile industry, from infrastructure and technical textiles to empowering artisans and promoting natural fibers like silk and jute.
