MeitY and MCTE Collaborate to Boost Defence Innovation and Self-Reliance

New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Military College of Telecommunications Engineering (MCTE) have formalized a strategic partnership aimed at fostering innovation and driving technological advancements for defence applications. As part of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, MeitY’s Research and Development (R&D) organizations handed over several indigenously developed products to MCTE, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in defence technology.

The partnership is designed to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies in key areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, chip design, 5G and beyond, strategic electronics, and communications systems. This collaboration builds on earlier commitments made during a 2023 meeting between the former Minister of State for MeitY and the Chief of Army Staff, aimed at addressing the evolving technological needs of the Indian Army.

Empowering Defence with Indigenous Technology

Secretary of MeitY, S. Krishnan, underscored the importance of empowering the Armed Forces with homegrown solutions during his visit to MCTE, accompanied by leaders from MeitY’s R&D organizations. He lauded the proposed establishment of a CDAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing) Centre of Excellence at MCTE, which will serve as a hub for defence technology innovation. Additionally, a Letter of Intent was signed with the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) to enhance military training programs, with a focus on creating a National Military Technology Research and Incubation Centre at MCTE.

“This collaboration will provide a platform for MSMEs and start-ups to contribute to defence innovation through an incubation ecosystem that promotes cross-pollination of ideas and technologies,” Krishnan stated.

Collaborating to Address Battlefield Needs

Lt. Gen. K. H. Gawas, Commandant of MCTE, emphasized the significance of collaboration between the Indian Army and the research community to understand and address the evolving needs of modern battlefields. “To unlock the true potential of innovation and achieve a Viksit Bharat (Developed India), there is a need for closer cooperation between the Army and researchers. This partnership will help drive future defence innovations and equip our forces with the tools needed for a rapidly changing battlefield environment,” he said.
