Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh Emphasizes Indian Diaspora’s Role in Global Development at VAIBHAV Fellowship Event

New Delhi: Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh highlighted the significant contribution of the Indian diaspora to global economic growth in a ceremony held in New Delhi today. He emphasized their role in adding value to countries and societies worldwide while maintaining a strong connection with their motherland. Dr Jitendra Singh stated that the current environment in India offers more opportunities and increased ease of work, encouraging the diaspora to explore collaborations and investments.

Addressing the announcement of the first Vaishvik Bharatiya Vaigyanik (VAIBHAV) Fellowship results and the launch of the next cycle, Dr Jitendra Singh focused on the vital role played by the Indian diaspora in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM). These professionals contribute significantly to societal and global advancements, bringing about technological changes and innovation, particularly in social and developmental sectors.

Dr Jitendra Singh quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words from the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas event in 2017, emphasizing the emotional connection the Indian diaspora maintains with their roots. He noted that the relationship with over 34 million People of Indian Origin and Non-Resident Indians abroad is complex yet essential.

The VAIBHAV Fellowship, which brings together fellows from top institutes globally, aims to foster collaboration with Indian institutes such as IITs and IISc. Dr Jitendra Singh stressed the importance of the fellowship in establishing research capabilities aligned with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Distinguished VAIBHAV fellows will create a collaborative network of cutting-edge research programs, addressing priority areas of the Indian government. Dr Jitendra Singh commended the diaspora for their potential to facilitate an exchange of best practices, contributing to collaborative research between nations.

Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary DST, highlighted the need to strengthen scientific areas in India, including Renewable Energy, Electric Vehicles, Quantum Technologies, and Affordable Healthcare. He expressed optimism that the Indian diaspora could expand the horizons of Indian researchers, providing unique perspectives and guidance.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, is implementing the VAIBHAV Fellowship Program, promoting collaboration between Indian and global researchers. The recently announced fellows will identify Indian institutions for collaboration and engage in joint research endeavors for up to three years.

The fellowship program aligns with India’s commitment to scientific progress, technological innovation, and collaboration on a global scale. The Indian diaspora, with its wealth of knowledge and experiences, is seen as a catalyst for advancing research, development, and innovation in the country.
