Union Minister Anurag Thakur Inaugurates 28th International Conference on Broadcast and Media Technology

New Delhi: Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Shri Anurag Thakur, inaugurated the 28th International Conference and Exhibition on Broadcast and Media Technology in New Delhi today. In his inaugural address, the Minister acknowledged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s pivotal role in nurturing India’s broadcasting industry, guiding it through transformative phases with sagacity and foresight.

Highlighting the Ministry’s commitment to promoting public service broadcasting, inclusive policies, media literacy initiatives, and encouraging private participation, Shri Thakur emphasized the foundation laid for a vibrant, inclusive, and resilient broadcasting and media ecosystem in India.

The Minister stressed the need to strengthen Public Service Broadcasting, providing quality content that aligns with India’s rich cultural heritage. He commended Prasar Bharati for its pivotal role in shaping the nation’s narrative and adapting to technological advancements.

Shri Thakur discussed the challenges and opportunities presented by technological advancements, emphasizing the demand for high-quality, personalized content across multiple platforms. He underscored the importance of indigenous research and development, collaboration between industry and academia, and actions today determining the success of the dream for self-reliant broadcasting.

Addressing the audience, the Minister explored the potential of New Direct to Mobile (D2M) technologies, offering exciting content possibilities for terrestrial broadcasting on various platforms. He encouraged the exploration of innovative options like Next Gen broadcasting for a wider reach and enhanced user experiences.

Data security emerged as a critical theme, with Shri Thakur highlighting India’s commitment to developing indigenous cybersecurity solutions. He stressed the need to prioritize the protection of sensitive information and the integrity of digital infrastructure.

The Minister advocated for sustainable practices in broadcasting operations, positioning India as a leader in solar-powered broadcast equipment and energy-efficient studios. He emphasized the strategic necessity of minimizing carbon footprints and reducing waste.

Acknowledging the evolving media landscape with a shift towards OTT platforms, Shri Thakur emphasized the need for rapid adaptation in content creation strategies, technology adoption, and regulatory frameworks.

However, he cautioned that content regulation requires careful consideration, striking a balance between freedom of expression and upholding societal values.

The BES Expo, according to Shri Thakur, serves as a crucial platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, idea-sharing, and partnerships shaping the future of the broadcasting industry.

During the event, Shri Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of I&B, mentioned the draft broadcast services (Regulation) Bill 2023 for consultation. Shri Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman, TRAI, emphasized the vast potential for growth in the broadcasting sector.

Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO, Prasar Bharati, spoke on the fast-changing media landscape, stressing the need for quality content and preserving spectrum for public service broadcasters.

In his welcome address, Sri Sunil, President, BES, highlighted the challenges posed by evolving technologies such as D2M in the media landscape.
