Union Health Minister Inaugurates 9th National Summit on Public Healthcare Innovations

Puri: Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda inaugurated the 9th National Summit on Good & Replicable Practices and Innovation in the Public Healthcare System in Puri, Odisha. The event saw the presence of key dignitaries including Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Odisha Health Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, and Member of Parliament Dr. Sambit Patra.

The two-day summit aims to document and showcase innovative practices adopted by various States and Union Territories (UTs) to address public health challenges. It serves as a platform for cross-learning and knowledge sharing among healthcare professionals and policymakers.

Addressing the summit, JP Nadda highlighted India’s progress in healthcare since 2014. He emphasized that the National Health Policy 2017 marked a shift from curative to comprehensive healthcare, integrating preventive, promotive, and tertiary care measures.

He acknowledged the success of the Ayushman Arogya Mandir initiative under the National Health Mission, which has bolstered primary healthcare across the country. He also lauded Odisha’s improvements in Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR), which have significantly declined in recent years.

Nadda referenced the WHO’s World Malaria Report 2024, which commended India’s reduction in malaria cases. He also highlighted the nation’s 17.7% decline in tuberculosis (TB) incidence from 2015 to 2023, surpassing the global average decline of 8.3%. India remains committed to its TB eradication goals despite setbacks from the COVID-19 pandemic, with the ongoing 100-Day TB Elimination Campaign already identifying 5 lakh patients across 455 districts.

Acknowledging the contributions of ASHA workers and grassroots health officials, Shri Nadda stressed the importance of community participation (Jan Bhagidari) in public health initiatives. He urged Panchayati Raj Institutions to play a greater role in strengthening local healthcare systems.

Highlighting the rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the Union Minister emphasized the need for lifestyle changes. He commended NHM’s Intensified Special NCD Screening Drive, which offers free screening for diabetes, hypertension, and cancers (oral, breast, and cervical). A recent Lancet study found that patients under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY saw a 90% increase in access to cancer treatment within 30 days, reducing delays and financial burdens.

Nadda announced that every district in India will have daycare cancer centers within the next three years, with 200 districts set to be covered this year. He also underscored the role of telemedicine in strengthening healthcare delivery.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the Union Government’s vision of Swasthya Bharat. He highlighted the merger of Odisha’s Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana with Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, enabling over 4.5 crore Odia citizens, including migrant workers, to access treatment in 29,000 hospitals nationwide.

The Chief Minister also announced the establishment of key national institutions in Odisha, including the National Institute of Yoga and Naturopathy, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research (NIPER), and the National Institute of Speech and Hearing. Additionally, the state will set up a new Government Nursing College and four dental colleges.

On the occasion, Nadda and other dignitaries released multiple reports, including:

  • A Coffee Table Book on the 9th National Summit on Best Practices
  • The 16th Common Review Mission Report
  • Four Regional Conferences of NHM Report (2024-25)
  • The Non-Communicable Diseases Conference Report (January 2025)

Additional Secretary & Mission Director (NHM) Aradhana Patnaik and other senior officials were present, emphasizing the importance of resource optimization, enhanced quality standards, and a collaborative approach in delivering equitable and affordable healthcare across India.

The 9th National Summit serves as a crucial platform to drive policy changes and strengthen India’s healthcare system, ensuring continuous innovation and efficiency in public health services.
