Bhubaneswar: In a move aimed at improving connectivity between Delhi and Haryana, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Rithala – Narela – Nathupur (Kundli) corridor of Delhi Metro’s Phase IV project. This new 26.463 km corridor will play a pivotal role in connecting northwestern parts of Delhi with Haryana, significantly enhancing the region’s transportation network.
The corridor, which is scheduled to be completed within four years, will be developed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,230 crore. The project is part of the ongoing Phase IV expansion of Delhi Metro, with the construction being executed by the DMRC, which operates under a 50:50 partnership between the Government of India (GoI) and the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD).
This new stretch will extend the operational Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) – Rithala Red Line corridor, significantly improving connectivity in areas such as Narela, Bawana, and parts of Rohini. Once completed, the corridor will feature 21 elevated stations, including Rithala, Rohini Sector 25, Bawana Industrial Area, Narela DDA Sports Complex, and Nathupur. Notably, this line will also connect Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh with Nathupur in Haryana, thus benefiting the entire National Capital Region (NCR).
The Rithala – Narela – Nathupur corridor will be the fourth Delhi Metro extension into Haryana, joining existing connections to Gurugram, Ballabhgarh, and Bahadurgarh. The expansion of the metro network is expected to ease road congestion, reduce pollution caused by motor vehicles, and stimulate economic growth in the NCR region.
In addition to the Phase IV corridors, the Delhi Metro is already in the process of constructing 65.202 km across three priority corridors, with over 56% of the work completed. These corridors are expected to be operational by March 2026. Furthermore, two additional corridors, spanning 20.762 km, have been approved and are in the pre-tendering stages.
As of today, the Delhi Metro serves an average of 64 lakh passengers daily, with the highest recorded passenger journey being 78.67 lakh on November 18, 2024. With a total of 392 km and 288 stations, Delhi Metro is the largest metro network in India and one of the largest in the world. This expansion further cements Delhi Metro’s position as the lifeline of the city, renowned for its punctuality, reliability, and safety.
The new Rithala – Narela – Nathupur corridor is set to offer a major boost to public transport, ease traffic congestion, and provide a sustainable alternative for daily commuters in the NCR region.
