Tribal Communities Enthusiastically Participate in General Elections 2024

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI), in a historic move, witnessed vibrant participation from tribal communities, including the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), in the recently conducted phase 1 and phase 2 of the General Elections 2024. Notably, the Shompen tribe of Great Nicobar exercised their franchise for the first time in a General Election, marking a significant milestone.

Over the past two years, the ECI has made concerted efforts to integrate PVTGs and other tribal groups into the electoral process, yielding remarkable results. Special initiatives were undertaken to ensure their enrollment as voters and active participation in the electoral process. These efforts were reinforced through special outreach camps and initiatives across specific states where PVTGs reside.

In Madhya Pradesh, home to PVTGs like Baiga, Bhariya, and Sahariya, there was immense enthusiasm among voters during the two phases of voting. Tribal theme-based polling stations adorned with traditional motifs welcomed voters, showcasing the vibrant spirit of democracy.

Western and southern regions of Karnataka house PVTGs like Jenu Kuruba and Koraga. The state ensured 100% enrollment of eligible PVTGs, with district and AC level tribal welfare committees playing a crucial role in voter awareness and enrollment drives.

Kerala witnessed inspiring participation from PVTGs, including communities like Koraga and Cholanaikayan. Despite geographical challenges, efforts were made to facilitate transportation for tribal voters, with many elderly tribal members displaying unwavering commitment to exercising their democratic right.

The Reang community in Tripura showcased remarkable resilience, with efforts made to enhance their electoral participation through voter education and awareness initiatives.

Odisha, home to 13 PVTGs, recorded 100% enrollment of eligible voters, with innovative approaches like mobile demonstration vehicles and voter education campaigns in local dialects.

Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Chhattisgarh also witnessed significant participation from PVTGs, with various states implementing tailored initiatives to ensure their inclusion in the electoral process.

India’s tribal population, comprising 75 PVTG communities, constitutes 8.6% of the total population. The ECI’s efforts have led to the inclusion of PVTGs in the electoral process, with the establishment of new polling booths in previously inaccessible areas and special enrollment drives yielding positive outcomes. In the recent state legislative assembly elections, around 9 lakh eligible voters from 14 PVTG communities were successfully enrolled, reflecting the Commission’s commitment to inclusive democracy.
