Tanush Kotian and Tushar Deshpande, Mumbai’s No.10 and No.11 Hit Historic first-class centuries in Ranji Trophy Quaterfinal

Mumbai:  In a stunning display of resilience and batting prowess, Tanush Kotian and Tushar Deshpande etched their names into the history books as the first No.10 and No.11 pairing in the Ranji Trophy, and only the second in the recorded history of first-class cricket, to score individual centuries in the same innings. The remarkable feat unfolded during the quarter-final clash against Baroda.

Mumbai, who found themselves at 337/9, witnessed an extraordinary turnaround as the Deshpande-Kotian duo piled on an astonishing 232 runs for the last wicket. The innings concluded with Mumbai reaching an imposing total of 569 runs, setting the stage for a monumental target of 606 for Baroda to chase on the final day. Mumbai qualified for semifinal of the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 by taking first innings lead against Baroda.

The partnership, which eventually ended with Deshpande’s dismissal at 123 off 129 balls, and Kotian finishing unbeaten on 120 off 129 balls, not only secured Mumbai’s dominant position in the quarter-final but also showcased the exceptional resilience and batting skills of the lower-order batsmen.

Tanush Kotian reached his century in a spectacular fashion, facing 115 balls and accumulating nine fours and three sixes. Following suit, Tushar Deshpande achieved his maiden First-Class century in just 112 deliveries, comprising eight fours and six maximums.

This historic achievement draws parallels with a similar feat in 1946 when Chandu Sarwate and Shute Banerjee, playing at No.10 and No.11 for the Indians, scored centuries against Surrey in a first-class match during India’s tour of England. Deshpande and Kotian have now joined this exclusive club, further highlighting their contribution to Mumbai’s rich cricketing history.
