Shreyas Iyer Set to Make a Comeback in Domestic Cricket; Named in Mumbai Squad for Ranji Trophy Semifinal

Mumbai:  After facing scrutiny for his absence in Mumbai’s recent quarterfinal against Baroda, Indian middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer is set to return to domestic cricket. Iyer has been included in the Ranji Trophy squad for the upcoming semifinal clash against Tamil Nadu, scheduled to take place in Mumbai on March 2.

The decision comes amid criticisms leveled against Iyer for allegedly neglecting domestic cricket despite being declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Nitin Patel, the head SSM, NCA, addressed the concerns, stating, “Shreyas Iyer is fit and available for selection as per the handover report of the Indian team after the second Test match against England. There are currently no fresh injuries reported after his departure from Team India,” in communication to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

However, sources close to the player reveal that Iyer has been battling persistent back pain, a chronic ailment that required surgery last year. His return to domestic cricket is seen as an effort to address the criticisms and reinforce his commitment to the domestic circuit.

In a notable change to the 16-member squad, Mumbai selectors have omitted all-rounder Shivam Dube. It has been revealed that Dube is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA and is expected to need at least three more weeks to attain full fitness. Consequently, should Mumbai qualify for the final, Dube will not be available, being ruled out for the remainder of the Ranji Trophy. The team will be captained by Ajinkya Rahane.

The Mumbai Squad for the semifinal includes Ajinkya Rahane (C), Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Bhupen Lalwani, Amogh Bhatkal, Musheer Khan, Prasad Pawar (WK), Hardik Tamore (WK), Shardul Thakur, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Aditya Dhumal, Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Awasthi, Roystan Dias, and Dhawal Kulkarni.
