Spotlight on Non-Feature Films at IFFI 2024: Jury Highlights Talent and Challenges

Goa: The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has once again highlighted the vibrancy and diversity of non-feature films, with the Indian Panorama Non-Feature Films Jury unveiling an exciting selection of 20 films. At a press conference held on the festival’s sidelines, Jury Chairperson Shri Subbiah Nallamuthu expressed his admiration for the overwhelming response, revealing that more than 262 entries were received from across the country, with a significant representation from the Northeast.

“Filmmakers from various walks of life, including college students and young creators, have showcased exceptional storytelling and content,” he remarked.

The selection process has brought a Ladakhi film, ‘Ghar Jaisa Kuch’, directed by Harsh Sangani, to the forefront as the opening feature. Jury member Shalini Shah described this as “a rare and proud occasion,” reflecting the growing diversity in Indian cinema. She also highlighted the remarkable progress of Haryanvi cinema, attributing its improvement in craft to consistent mentoring efforts.

While celebrating the talent displayed by filmmakers, the jury underscored the challenges non-feature films face in gaining visibility and support. Vandana Kohli, a member of the jury, stressed the need for greater awareness about these films, suggesting that film clubs and increased media coverage could play a vital role. She noted that while content in non-feature films is often outstanding, aspects like editing and storytelling could benefit significantly from professional guidance.

The jury pointed to the lack of viable platforms for documentaries as a persistent challenge, calling on OTT platforms to step forward in commissioning and promoting such films. They also urged the government to consider channeling CSR funds into individual non-feature film projects to ensure financial support.

The jury observed encouraging trends, such as the increasing number of entries from the Northeast and the growing efforts of urban filmmakers who venture into remote regions to create impactful documentaries. They lauded the National Film Development Corporation’s initiatives, including financial support for non-feature films in the Northeast and the establishment of the Documentary Resource Initiative, which aims to nurture documentary filmmaking.

Shri Subbiah Nallamuthu, an acclaimed documentary filmmaker and the recipient of multiple national and international awards, led the jury for non-feature films. He was joined by six other distinguished members: Rajnikant Acharya, Ronel Haobam, Usha Deshpande, Vandana Kohli, Mithunchandra Chaudhari, and Shalini Shah.

The jury’s selection reflects the extraordinary creativity and talent of India’s filmmakers. Films like ‘Ghar Jaisa Kuch’ showcase the genre’s ability to tell unique and powerful stories, drawing attention to lesser-known regions and issues.
