Sports Ministers, Athletes Join Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya in Women’s Day Cycle Rally

Telangana: The city witnessed a vibrant celebration of International Women’s Day as Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, led a special cycle rally at Kanha Shanti Vanam. The event saw enthusiastic participation from state sports ministers, athletes, and sports administrators, all coming together to highlight the strength and achievements of women in sports.

Flagging off the rally, Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This cycle rally is a testament to our Nari Shakti, showcasing the determination, leadership, and excellence of women in sports and beyond.” Held alongside the Chintan Shivir, a national meet focused on India’s preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the country’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Games, the rally also engaged members of Kanha Shanti Vanam, a renowned wellness and spiritual center.

To mark Women’s Day, Dr. Mandaviya, along with Secretary (Sports) Smt. Sujata Chaturvedi and former Olympian and badminton star Pulella Gopichand, launched the ASMITA newsletter. This publication captures the essence of the ‘Sports For Women’ mission initiated by the government in 2021, highlighting the impact of ASMITA leagues in empowering young women pursuing careers in sports.

Former All-England champion Gopichand, who has coached Olympic medallists Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, expressed his support for the initiative. “Women have won more Olympic medals for India, and it is only fair that they receive even greater promotion. ASMITA provides a fantastic platform, and when 15 sports ministers gather to discuss our Olympic dreams, it marks a significant step. What matters now is proper policy-making and effective implementation,” he said.

The rally was led by Assam’s Sports Minister Shrimati Nandita Gorlosa, alongside women trainees from the Gopichand Badminton Academy and para-athlete Deepthi Jeevanji, a bronze medallist at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Dr. Mandaviya, who actively participated in the cycling event, reiterated the importance of incorporating cycling into daily life for better health. He highlighted the success of the Sundays on Cycle initiative, which has been gaining traction nationwide as a means to promote fitness. “Cycling should become a lifestyle trend and a powerful tool to combat obesity and lifestyle diseases. I urge all citizens to strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Fit India Movement by dedicating at least an hour every Sunday to fitness,” he added.

The event saw a sea of yellow as participants cycled through the scenic 3-km route, enjoying the cool morning breeze. Sharing her experience, Smt. Gorlosa said, “I have cycled after 30 years, and it brought back wonderful memories. When Dr. Mandaviya asked me to join, I couldn’t say no, and I don’t regret it. On Women’s Day, it was a special feeling, and I completely agree that cycling is a great way to stay fit and channel energy positively.”
