Spectrum 2024: NIFT Bhubaneswar Celebrates Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Bhubaneswar: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bhubaneswar, kicked off its much-awaited annual fest, Spectrum 2024, alongside Craft Bazaar 2024, in a vibrant inauguration ceremony today. Spanning two days from March 19 to 20, 2024, the event serves as a platform for showcasing the convergence of traditional crafts and contemporary designs, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Odisha and the innovative spirit of its artisans.

Distinguished guests, including Pranati Chhotray, IAS, Managing Director of Boyanika, Sarat Patra, a renowned handloom artist from the Nuapatna Cluster, and Ajit Kumar Swain, a marketing expert from the Raghurajpur Cluster, graced the inaugural session.

Rajesh Kumar Jha, Director of NIFT Bhubaneswar, highlighted the institute’s commitment to bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern fashion education. Pranati Chhotray praised NIFT’s efforts in nurturing this symbiotic relationship, while Sarat Patra shared insights into preserving indigenous art forms through his handloom creations

Reflecting the significance of the event, Prof. Dr. Binaya Bhusan Jena, Chairperson of Fashion Management Studies (FMS) at NIFT and Former Director of NIFT, Bhubaneswar, said, “These annual events serve as an example to the rich tapestry of our cultural heritage and the creative expertise of our artisans. Spectrum not only provides a platform for budding designers to showcase their talent but also fosters a deeper appreciation for traditional craftsmanship. As we celebrate this fusion of tradition and modernity, we pave the way for a vibrant future where heritage and innovation coexist harmoniously.”

The event lineup for the first day included a diverse array of activities aimed at showcasing talent and promoting a deeper understanding of crafts. From the unveiling of the fest’s mascot to cultural performances and the inauguration of Craft Bazaar stalls featuring craftwork from Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand, the morning brimmed with enthusiasm and cultural pride. The day also featured competitive events such as short filmmaking, photo storytelling, and physical activities like badminton and chess, providing a platform for participants to exhibit their creativity and skills.

A captivating fashion show by NIFT Bhubaneswar students, showcasing innovative designs inspired by traditional craftsmanship was also held.
