SJTA Files Police Complaint Over Mobile Phone Use on Rath Yatra Chariots

Puri: The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has filed a formal complaint with Singhadwar Police Station after visuals showing individuals using mobile phones atop the chariots of the Holy Trinity during this year’s Rath Yatra went viral on social media platforms.

Despite strict prohibitory orders issued by SJTA banning the use and possession of mobile phones on the sacred chariots, the footage circulating online reveals blatant violations, sparking criticism and concern over the breach of religious protocol.

In a letter addressed to the Inspector-in-Charge of Singhadwar Police Station, the Officer on Special Duty (Security) from SJTA has urged police to initiate legal action against those responsible for disregarding the ban. The complaint highlights that the use of mobile phones not only undermines the sanctity of the rituals but also creates safety risks for both devotees and servitors participating in the festival.

The SJTA had implemented the mobile phone prohibition as part of broader efforts to preserve the spiritual discipline and security associated with the annual Rath Yatra, one of the most significant festivals in the Jagannath tradition.

As the controversy unfolds, the Niladri Bije ritual — the final and emotionally charged event of the festival, marking the return of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra to the Shree Jagannath Temple — is set to take place later today. Observed on Trayodashi tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Asadha, the ritual holds immense religious significance, symbolizing the divine reunion of Lord Jagannath with Goddess Lakshmi.

While preparations for Niladri Bije are in full swing, the SJTA’s strong stance on upholding discipline and sanctity serves as a reminder of the deep reverence that defines this ancient festival — and the need for all participants to adhere to its spiritual code.
