Eco-Friendly Rakhis Made by Odisha’s Rural Artisans Hit Bhubaneswar Market

Bhubaneswar: Handmade Rakhis crafted from traditional and eco-friendly materials are drawing attention in Bhubaneswar this Raksha Bandhan, with a special stall showcasing the skills and creativity of Odisha’s rural artisans.

The Rakhi stall, launched by the Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS) at Patia on Monday, brings together products made by rural women, artisans and producer groups from across the state. ORMAS Additional CEO Geetanjali Behera inaugurated the stall.

The collection reflects Odisha’s rich craft traditions, with Rakhis made from sabai grass, cane, paddy, bamboo and cowrie shells. Several designs also feature Lord Jagannath motifs and Pattachitra artwork, giving the festive products a distinctly Odia identity.

Besides offering an alternative to mass-produced festive items, the initiative is intended to create a direct link between artisans and consumers. By providing a dedicated marketplace, ORMAS is helping rural producer groups gain greater visibility and expand opportunities to sell their handmade products.

The initiative also promotes the use of natural and locally available materials, encouraging consumers to choose products that are both environmentally conscious and rooted in local traditions.

ORMAS has been undertaking market-linkage initiatives to help rural producers access wider markets and strengthen their livelihoods. The Rakhi stall is part of these efforts to bring rural craftsmanship to urban consumers during the festive season.

With their combination of traditional artistry, local identity and sustainable materials, the handmade Rakhis offer consumers a way to celebrate Raksha Bandhan while supporting Odisha’s rural artisan communities.
