Seven Tunnels Under Construction in the Khurda Road-Balangir Rail Line Project

Bhubaneswar: The Khurda Road-Balangir Rail Line Project, a crucial infrastructure initiative under Indian Railways, is making significant progress despite facing extraordinary engineering challenges, particularly in tunnel construction. Spanning 301 kilometers, the project aims to improve connectivity in remote regions of Odisha and is under close monitoring by the Ministry of Railways to ensure timely completion.

Key Tunnel Sections and Breakthroughs

A total of seven tunnels, stretching over 12.76 kilometers, are being constructed within a 75-kilometer stretch between Daspalla and Purunakatak. These tunnels, located in both Boudh and Nayagarh districts, are among the most complex parts of the project.

Notable achievements include the successful breakthrough of Tunnel Number 7 on August 20, 2024, and Tunnel Number 1 on August 21, 2024, marking significant milestones in the project’s progress.

  • Longest Tunnel: The project’s longest tunnel, located near Adhenigarh in Boudh District, spans 4.885 kilometers and includes a 700-meter escape tunnel for enhanced safety.
  • Boudh District: Four tunnels, including the longest, are located between Adhenigarh and Charichhak.
  • Nayagarh District: Three tunnels are being constructed between Daspalla and Banigochha, including two between Daspalla and Buguda.

Major Challenges in Tunnel Construction

  1. Complex Geological Conditions: The tunnels pass through regions with varying soil densities and rock formations, requiring advanced tunneling techniques to ensure stability and safety.
  2. Environmental Sensitivity: The tunnels cut through environmentally sensitive areas, including wildlife sanctuaries, necessitating conservation efforts such as the construction of viaducts to minimize ecological disruption.
  3. Precision in Curved Tunnels: Five of the seven tunnels feature curves of 2.5 to 3 degrees, demanding exceptional precision in engineering and alignment to maintain structural integrity.
  4. Simultaneous Construction: To meet the project’s tight timelines, construction is being carried out simultaneously from both ends of the tunnels, a strategy that requires meticulous coordination and resource management.

Strategic Progress and Completion Timeline

As of now, 199 kilometers of the total 301-kilometer rail line have been completed, including 105.8 kilometers from Khurda Road to Daspalla and 93 kilometers from Balangir to Boudh. The remaining section from Boudh to Purunakatak is on track for completion in the coming months.

The successful completion of these tunnels will not only mark a major engineering achievement but also open the doors for enhanced connectivity and economic development in the region. Indian Railways continues to demonstrate its ability to tackle challenging terrains and deliver critical infrastructure to underserved areas.
