Savita Punia Guides India to Victory in Thrilling Shootout

Rourkela: India’s captain and goalkeeper extraordinaire, Savita Punia, showcased exceptional goalkeeping skills in a nail-biting shootout, leading her team to a 2-1 victory against the United States. The intense match, part of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24, concluded with a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation time at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on Sunday.

Savita’s stellar performance during the shootout, marked by four remarkable saves, secured a bonus point for India. The shootout saw Mumtaz Khan and Sonika converting their shots, ensuring India’s triumph after the regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw. Deepika (19′) netted a goal for India, while Ashley Sessa (45′) scored for the USA during the regular play.

In a high-paced and attacking display of hockey, India, fueled by a passionate home crowd, dominated ball possession early on. Despite an energetic start by the USA, India’s assertive offense led to their first penalty corner, resulting in Deepika’s precise shot that secured the lead in the second quarter.

The USA, trailing on the scoreboard, intensified their attacks, but Savita’s exceptional saves and India’s robust defense maintained the home team’s lead at half-time. India continued their aggressive play, earning more penalty corners, but failed to capitalize, maintaining a slim 1-0 lead.

The third quarter showcased Lalremsiami’s impressive skills, earning consecutive penalty corners for India. However, USA’s goalkeeper, Kelsey Bing, made outstanding saves, and Ashley Sessa’s diving shot leveled the score at 1-1. The last quarter saw both teams probing for a winning goal, with Savita’s crucial save denying the USA’s penalty corner attempt.

As the match concluded with a 1-1 tie, the shootout became the deciding factor. Savita’s brilliance in goalkeeping, coupled with successful shots by Mumtaz Khan and Sonika, secured a 2-1 victory for India. The thrilling encounter highlighted India’s resilience and Savita Punia’s crucial role in clinching the win.
