Rohit Sharma Retires from Test Cricket, Focuses on ODIs Ahead of England Tour

Mumbai: In a major development for Indian cricket, Team India captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. The announcement came through an Instagram story on Wednesday evening, marking the end of an illustrious red-ball career for the 38-year-old opener.

Rohit, who played 67 Tests, scored over 5,000 runs, and became one of India’s most dependable openers in the longest format, wrote:

“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.”

The news comes just weeks ahead of India’s high-profile tour of England, where they are scheduled to play a five-Test series, beginning June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. Rohit’s decision leaves the selectors with the immediate task of appointing a new full-time Test captain.

Among the frontrunners for the role are Shubman Gill, seen as the face of India’s next-generation batting lineup, and Jasprit Bumrah, the pace spearhead who has previously led India in Tests.

Rohit’s Test journey, which began in 2013, saw a revival in the latter half of his career after being promoted as an opener. He played pivotal roles in India’s overseas triumphs and home dominance, particularly with his performances in England, Australia, and against top Test sides.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to make an official statement on the next Test captain and squad for the England tour in the coming days.

Rohit’s decision signifies a shift in focus toward shorter formats, where he continues to be a key figure. His leadership in ODIs will now take center stage as India prepares for upcoming white-ball assignments.
