Renowned Lyricist Sangram Mohanty, Writer of ‘Jhuma Jhuma Golapi Belare,’ Passes Away at 78

Baripada: The Odia music industry has lost one of its most cherished lyricists, Sangram Keshari Mohanty, who passed away at his residence in Bhanjapur on Tuesday. He was 78. Known for his iconic contributions to Odia cinema and music, Mohanty’s death has left a void in the hearts of music lovers across the state.

According to family sources, Mohanty had been suffering from prolonged health issues and breathed his last in the morning. His last rites were performed at Barunei Ghat, as his family, friends, and fans bid a final farewell to the beloved lyricist.

Born on January 27, 1947, in Baripada, Mohanty was the son of former MLA Harihara Mohanty. His journey in the world of music began in 1971 when he gained recognition as a lyricist with All India Radio, Cuttack. Over the decades, Mohanty contributed numerous memorable lyrics to Odia films, albums, and radio programmes, becoming an integral part of the Odia music landscape.

Some of his most iconic works include the beloved songs ‘Jhuma Jhuma Golapi Belare’ from the film Abhilasha and ‘Kahana E Phula Kahana’ from Phula Chandana, both of which remain timeless classics. His lyrics not only captured the essence of Odia culture but also resonated deeply with the emotions of the common people, leaving an indelible mark on Odia music.

Apart from these, Mohanty penned lyrics for other celebrated songs like ‘Mo Mana Khali Tori Pain’ and ‘Tume Hni Sathi Mora’, which were composed by Saroj Patnaik and featured in works directed by Gouri Shankar Das and Surendra Mohanty, respectively. His music captured the heart of every listener, and his songs continue to be revered by fans of all ages.

Following his passing, a pall of gloom descended over Odia music circles. Fans, friends, and respected figures from the Odia film and music industries flocked to his residence to offer their tributes to the legendary lyricist.
