Bhubaneswar: The Punjabi community in Bhubaneswar came together in a vibrant display of tradition and togetherness to celebrate Lohri, the popular harvest festival, with great enthusiasm and warmth. The festivities were held at Punjab Bhavan, where more than 400 members of the Punjabi community, along with representatives of the Veterans Club and several eminent citizens, participated in the celebrations.
The evening began with the traditional Lohri Poojan, followed by the lighting of the ceremonial bonfire. Adhering to age-old customs, participants gathered around the flames and offered popcorn, sugar candies, sesame seeds, gur and other traditional items, symbolising gratitude, prosperity and the welcoming of a new agricultural cycle.
The celebration came alive with folk songs, energetic Bhangra performances and rhythmic dhol beats, creating a lively and immersive festive atmosphere. The glowing bonfire served as a symbol of unity and community spirit, lighting up not just the surroundings but also the hearts of those present.
Lohri, a popular winter harvest festival celebrated widely by Sikhs and Hindus across India, is observed with pomp and ceremony and is considered among the first major Hindu festivals of the year. The festival marks the end of winter and the onset of longer days, bringing with it warmth, joy and a strong sense of togetherness.
Addressing the gathering, Renu Hans, President of the Punjabi Arya Sanatan Biradari, said the festival symbolises hope and renewal. She expressed confidence that the spirit of Lohri would fill homes with happiness, prosperity and usher in a year of new opportunities.
Sanjiv Hans, Secretary of the Biradari, extended Lohri greetings to all members, noting that the sacred fire of Lohri purifies hearts and strengthens bonds within the community.
