Prime Minister Modi Encourages Athletes at Khelo India University Games in Northeast

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Khelo India University Games being held across seven states in the Northeast via video message. Commending the efforts of athletes, PM Modi highlighted the mascot of the games, ‘Ashtalakshmi,’ symbolizing the Northeast’s aspirations taking new wings, akin to a butterfly.

In his video message, the Prime Minister conveyed his best wishes to the participants, emphasizing the essence of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.’ He encouraged athletes to play with passion, fearlessness, and a focus on personal and team victories, noting that setbacks are opportunities to learn and grow.

Reflecting on national sports initiatives, PM Modi praised the widespread organization of sports events across India, from the Khelo India University Games in the Northeast to the Khelo India Winter Games in Ladakh, Khelo India Youth Games in Tamil Nadu, and Beach Games in Diu. He commended state governments, including Assam, for their role in promoting sports and providing opportunities for youth.

Addressing the changing perception of sports in society, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the shift in parental attitudes, where the achievements of children in sports are now a source of pride. He stressed the need to celebrate and honor sports achievements, creating a tradition akin to academic achievements.

Highlighting the rich sports culture of the Northeast, PM Modi encouraged athletes to gain experiences and contribute to the nation’s sports culture. He mentioned the government’s efforts in creating a conducive environment for athletes, from training facilities to scholarships, with a record budget allocation exceeding 3500 crore rupees for sports this year.

Proudly sharing India’s success in global sporting events, PM Modi cited remarkable achievements, including a record medal haul in the Asian Games and 26 medals at the World University Games in 2023. He emphasized that these achievements are a testament to what Indian athletes can accomplish with a scientific approach.

Recognizing the values instilled through sports, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of temperament, leadership, teamwork, and resilience for success in sports. He encouraged the youth to embrace sports not only for physical fitness but also for developing essential life skills.

PM Modi urged athletes to explore the beauty of the Northeast region beyond the sports arena, encouraging them to share their experiences on social media using #NorthEastMemories. He suggested learning local phrases and engaging with local communities to enhance their cultural experience, even experimenting with the Bhashini App.
