President of India Meets Prime Minister of Guyana, Discusses Bilateral Relations

New Delhi:  The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, welcomed the Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, H. E. Brigadier (Retd.) Mark Phillips, and his delegation at Rashtrapati Bhavan on February 7, 2024. During the meeting, the President highlighted the historical and cultural ties that connect India and Guyana, emphasizing the shared colonial past, diverse societies, and the significant presence of the Indian diaspora in Guyana.

President Murmu acknowledged the need to enhance bilateral trade and diversify the collaboration between the two nations. She pointed out the potential for cooperation in Ayurveda, bio-fuels, and agriculture, especially focusing on millets. Stressing the importance of addressing climate change and food security challenges, the President expressed optimism about joint efforts in these areas.

Congratulating Guyana on assuming the rotating Presidency of CARICOM and the current Presidency of the United Nations Security Council, President Murmu highlighted the shared commitment to reformed multilateralism. She also appreciated Guyana’s leadership in climate change, green energy, and sustainable development.

The meeting reflects the ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties and explore new avenues for collaboration between India and Guyana in various fields, contributing to the advancement of both nations.
