
Goa: President Droupadi Murmu attended the ‘Day at Sea’ event aboard INS Vikrant today, November 7, 2024, observing a series of naval operations and exercises conducted by the Indian Navy. During her time on board, the President witnessed the impressive Mig 29K fighter jet take-offs and landings, missile firing drills, and submarine maneuvers, showcasing the Navy’s operational strength. She was also briefed on the Indian Navy’s strategic role, operations, and vision, and took the opportunity to engage directly with the crew.
Addressing the fleet in a broadcast to all naval units at sea, President Murmu highlighted India’s long maritime history, spanning several thousand years, and underscored its geographic advantages, with a coastline extending over 7,500 kilometers. “India’s maritime potential is immense, providing avenues for economic growth, regional connectivity, and strategic influence,” she stated. She emphasized that as the nation progresses toward becoming a developed country, this maritime strength is a valuable asset.
In light of evolving global geopolitical dynamics, particularly within the maritime sphere, the President stressed the importance of reinforcing naval power to protect India’s interests. She praised the induction of INS Vikrant and the recent commissioning of India’s second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Arighaat, as well as the addition of advanced warships and naval infrastructure. According to her, these advancements underscore India’s position as a regional maritime power and strengthen its influence in the Indian Ocean Region.
President Murmu expressed pride in the Navy’s strides toward gender inclusivity, noting that the service recently appointed its first woman Commanding Officer on a warship and welcomed the first female helicopter pilot. “These milestones reflect the Navy’s proactive efforts to unlock the full combat potential of our women sea-warriors,” she remarked, hailing these accomplishments as transformative steps for gender representation in Indian defense forces.
