President Droupadi Murmu Strengthens Indo-Mauritian Ties during Visit to Mahatma Gandhi Institute

Moka: The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, visited the Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) in Moka, Mauritius, today, reaffirming the strong cultural and developmental ties between India and Mauritius.

President Murmu commenced her visit by paying homage to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, at the institute’s campus. The Mahatma Gandhi Institute, established in 1970 through a collaborative effort between the Governments of India and Mauritius, stands as a prominent institution dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of Indian arts, culture, and languages in Mauritius.

Addressing an enthusiastic crowd at the Institute, President Murmu expressed pride in the remarkable achievements of the Indian diaspora in Mauritius. She highlighted the diaspora’s accomplishments as an inspiring example not only for India but for Indians worldwide. The President emphasized the enduring development partnership between India and Mauritius, showcasing India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius on its developmental journey and improving the quality of life for its citizens.

President Murmu encouraged the Mahatma Gandhi Institute to create more opportunities for Mauritian youth to engage with India on multiple levels, including cultural, linguistic, educational, and business fronts. She stressed the importance of fostering stronger connections between the two nations, not only at the governmental level but also among the youth.

In a significant announcement, President Murmu extended the eligibility of Overseas Indian Citizenship for Indian-origin Mauritians of the 7th generation. This move aims to facilitate a stronger bond between the younger generation of Mauritians and their ancestral homeland.

During her visit, the President took the time to explore the rich historical archives housed at MGI. These records chronicle the arrival of the first Indian indentured laborers in Mauritius, providing invaluable insights into the shared history and heritage of the two nations.
