President Droupadi Murmu Graces 13th Graduation Ceremony of NISER

Bhubaneswar: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, attended the 13th Graduation Ceremony of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) at Bhubaneswar today.

In her speech, President Murmu acknowledged the rapid progress NISER has made in its relatively short existence, establishing itself as a significant institution in the education sector. She commended NISER for integrating scientific rationality with traditional values.

Addressing the students, the President emphasized that meaningful education and knowledge should contribute to the betterment and upliftment of humanity. She expressed confidence that the graduates would achieve excellence in their respective fields and fulfill their social duties with full accountability. She reminded the audience of Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of “merciless science,” highlighting the importance of promoting science with sensitivity towards humanity.

The President advised students to maintain humility and a spirit of inquiry. She encouraged them to view their knowledge as a social enterprise, using it for societal and national development.

President Murmu also spoke about the dual nature of scientific advancements, noting that while new technologies like CRISPR-Cas9 and Generative Artificial Intelligence bring immense potential, they also pose ethical and social challenges. She highlighted the need for responsible use of these technologies to avoid their potential pitfalls, such as deep fakes and regulatory challenges.

She acknowledged that research in fundamental science often requires patience, as significant breakthroughs can take years of perseverance. She urged students to remain resilient in the face of challenges, as advancements in fundamental research often lead to substantial benefits in other areas.
