Bhubaneswar: In the heart of Odisha, Sambalpur unfolds its culinary treasure trove, revealing the famed Sambalpur Sarasatiya, a delectable sweet synonymous with Prabhu Lal Gupta and his renowned Maa Samalei sweets. What was once a local delight is now drawing crowds in Bhubaneswar, thanks to the Ekamra Utsav organized by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority.
The aroma of Sarasatiya, crafted by the skilled hands of Prabhulal, permeates the air, enticing visitors to savor the authentic flavors of Odisha. This sweet treat, a culinary gem, is meticulously handcrafted by Prabhulal, showcasing his mastery in its creation.
Sarasatiya, crafted from the Ganjei (marijuana) tree, strikes a perfect balance between visual allure and tantalizing crispness. Prabhulal, the artisan behind this masterpiece, shared the secret behind its preparation. Slender branches are soaked overnight, producing a thick, saliva-like essence. When combined with boiled rice and sugar, this essence transforms into the delightful Sarasatiya. Each piece is fried to perfection in hot oil, encapsulating the essence of Sambalpur’s unique flavors in every bite.
Prabhulal’s shop, a living testament to centuries-old tradition, traces its roots back to his grandfather, Beni Madhav Halwai. Today, Prabhulal and his three sons carry forward this culinary legacy, infusing their creations with both passion and heritage. Grateful for the platform provided by Ama Byanjana at Ekamra Utsav, Prabhulal expressed joy in sharing their culinary heritage with a broader audience.
In his own words, “Our culinary heritage is a bridge that connects communities. Ekamra Utsav celebrates our traditions and brings our flavors to the world. It’s a joy to be part of this cultural exchange.” Visitors to Ekamra Utsav can experience the rich culinary heritage of Odisha through the exquisite Sarasatiya, a sweet tradition brought to life by Prabhulal from the heart of Sambalpur.
